The Animals Were Never Alone a Choose Your Own Adventure Essay
by Maria Lepistö and the
Animal Sound Society
Unlike all other recordings in the Animal Sound Archive, this one has a title: Schrei der Steppe. It was published by Verlag Knorr & Hirth G.m.b.H and is archived among the animals as a song.
The song is sung by a group of people but they are not credited. At times, the singing is overlapped by a roaring animal. You guess that it is a lion in a zoo; the reverb makes it clear that the animal is recorded close up, in a cage.
For some reason the author wanted to merge the singing people with wild animals, but the mixing is blunt; just two different recordings, layered on top of each other, fading in and out, sometimes focusing on the singing and sometimes on the roaring animal. It ends with a monkey.
