The Animals Were Never Alone a Choose Your Own Adventure Essay
by Maria Lepistö and the
Animal Sound Society
You call the Animal Sound Archive to vent about it, not expecting Karl to answer. And he doesn’t, but somebody does; the receptionist.
“Mhm, I heard about it too. 200 species each day! Scheiße! But you know what though, some species will never disappear” She is talking about domestic animals. You agree: “Yeah. We ought to give them more credit, I mean, they have served us for like… 10 000 years. Our civilization is dependent on them!”. “Sicherlich.” You can almost hear her nod.
“It doesn’t matter if they are wild or domestic, it’s like their existence is a problem that we need to solve. Sometimes there are too few of them, and sometimes there are too many.”
Her voice makes a grimace of disgusted agreement. “The way we evaluate them all the time... How do they contribute? What function do they serve? I read in an online self-help guide that my cat is useful. Useful!! Petting her reduces stress, they say…”
Her voice glitches due to bad reception.
