The Animals Were Never Alone
a Choose Your Own Adventure Essay
by Maria Lepistö and the Animal Sound Society
You look down on your feet and as you raise your gaze again, a new question takes form: “So, there is no reason for the scientists to listen to animals anymore?” Karl looks up from the computer screen, turns around and points at a pair of stereo speakers. There is still a reason for scientists to listen to animals. Every Wednesday evening, they gather in one of the rooms of the Zoological Institute of Humboldt University, to listen to a few favorite mp3s, drink beer and eat steaks, in a nerdy, relaxed after-work type of setting. It’s relaxing because they don't feel pressured to talk to each other. A few mumbled words here and there. Even though you don't know German, you understand that it's just their voices wanting to blend into the soundscape. Perhaps they are responding to the recordings?
