There has been a shift in research by the Animal Sound Archive, from studying the behavior of individual animals to monitoring the movements of whole populations. The recorders are counting the animals, tracking their movements as they migrate.
As the recording technology improves, the distance between the scientists and the animals increases and the scientists, now standing further away, appear smaller to the animals.
