The Animals Were Never Alone a Choose Your Own Adventure Essay
by Maria Lepistö and the
Animal Sound Society
You search the archive for dolphins because you want to know if they sound like your friend Ina. Everybody loves dolphins, including Miley Cyrus. If she could have any animal, it would be a dolphin. “I want one so bad”, she said, but her mother objected. “You can’t get a dolphin. What are you gonna do, like, put it in your pool?”
You find three different Bottlenose dolphins and they were all recorded swimming pools. Voices of alligators, tigers and lions bounce off from walls of concrete. There are species that you have never even heard about, but you refrain from googling them. Instead, you try to imagine what their bodies look like, judging only from their voices. You expect deep voices to come from big animals, but this is not always the case. Some frogs have deeper voices than rabbits, even deer. They are making love. The scientists are close.
