The Animals Were Never Alone a Choose Your Own Adventure Essay
by Maria Lepistö and the
Animal Sound Society
“But what if the animals don’t want to be understood?”
You look at the receptionist across an abyss of confusion, until she gives in and reformulates her question, articulating extra clearly:
“What if they are deliberately censoring their speech from us?”
Your silence encourages her to continue.
She explains that the animals are rejecting the Western imperative for all knowledge to be accessible at all times.
“You mean that the animals refuse to be translated?”
“Mhm. Animals are being dominated by humans in almost every aspect, but not when it comes to their voices.” For a moment, the conversation reaches a temporary conclusion, when you both agree that “Animal language is a form of resistance!”
You let the word resistance resonate for a while, until you resign, defeated by your stubbornness, and blurt out:
“But I still want to understand what they are saying.”
“Me too”
“I think, if we could only learn to listen, animal voices expose something pure, from an inside, a secret.”
